The Democratic Republic of the Congo has made a remarkable entry into the inner circle of global diplomatic powers. With an overwhelming 183 votes out of 187, the DRC has been elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term, following a decisive vote held this Tuesday at UN Headquarters in New York.
This historic diplomatic victory was immediately praised by Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka, who posted on her official X account:
“The DRC has been elected, with 183 votes out of 187, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2026–2027 term. This is a major step forward that confirms our country’s return to the international stage. Following our election to the UN General Assembly Vice Presidency, this new success illustrates the renewed confidence in the DRC.”
A Global Acknowledgment of Congolese Leadership
For Kinshasa, this vote is more than a seat at the table—it is international recognition of a resurgent leadership, an active diplomacy, and a strategic vision. The Prime Minister paid tribute to the nation’s diplomatic corps and to the leadership of President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, calling him a driving force behind this achievement:
“Under the leadership of President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, our diplomacy continues to grow stronger with purpose and clarity. I commend all those who raise our voice high. Let’s keep building a strong and influential diplomacy that serves peace and advances African interests.”
Reclaiming a Seat Among Global Decision-Makers
The DRC’s election to the Security Council comes at a pivotal moment in global geopolitics, particularly for Central Africa and the Great Lakes region, where peace, security, and governance remain critical. After years of being sidelined by internal conflicts and structural challenges, the DRC is now reclaiming a visible and assertive role on the international stage.
This development represents a strategic turning point: the DRC will now have a voice in major decisions on peacekeeping, conflict prevention, and reform of the multilateral UN system.
A Diplomacy Rooted in Africa and Committed to Multilateralism
This seat aligns with the Congolese government’s diplomatic priorities, which emphasize African integration, South-South cooperation, and the promotion of a unified African voice in global institutions.
* During its tenure, the DRC aims to:
* Advocate for Africa’s strategic interests,
* Promote African solutions to African challenges,
*Strengthen its contribution to global peace and stability.
This election follows another milestone: the DRC’s recent appointment as Vice President of the UN General Assembly—another sign of the international community’s restored trust in a nation undergoing a diplomatic renaissance.
An Ambitious Mission, a Significant Challenge
The 2026–2027 mandate at the Security Council is both a challenge and an opportunity. The DRC must now demonstrate its capacity to engage in dialogue, propose meaningful ideas, build consensus, and contribute effectively to international resolutions on major global crises.
But in Kinshasa, the message is clear: the time has come for the DRC to lead with influential diplomacy.
